  1. Paraffin is a common name for alkane, any 
  2. member of the series of hydrocarbons with the 
  3. general formula CnH2n+2. The lower members 
  4. are gases, such as methane (marsh or natural 
  5. gas). The middle ones (mainly liquid) form 
  6. the basis of petrol, kerosene, and 
  7. lubricating oils, while the higher ones 
  8. (paraffin waxes) are used in ointment and 
  9. cosmetic bases.
